Khalwale’s Unexpected Bayern Munich and Ajax Remark Puts Ruto in the Spotlight
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has delivered a strong political message to President William Ruto, declaring that even the arrival of famous European football clubs Bayern Munich and Ajax will not prevent the Head of State from losing power in the 2027 General Election.
In remarks that have added to the growing political debate ahead of the next general election, Khalwale dismissed the significance of high-profile football events as a means of winning public support, insisting that Kenyans will ultimately make their decision based on the country’s political and economic situation.
“Hata ulete Bayern Munich na Ajax, baada ya hiyo game, wewe Ruto utaenda nyumbani,” Khalwale said, meaning that even if Ruto brings Bayern Munich and Ajax to Kenya, he will still be voted out after the match.
The senator’s remarks appeared to target the government’s promotion of major sporting events and announcements involving internationally recognised football clubs.
His statement suggested that entertainment and sporting spectacles would not necessarily change the political mood among voters.
Bayern Munich and Ajax are among Europe’s best-known football clubs, with large international fan bases.
Their names carry considerable appeal among football supporters, particularly young people who follow European football competitions.
However, Khalwale’s comments underscored the opposition’s argument that the government should be judged primarily on its record in office rather than on the events it organises or promotes.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, political leaders have increasingly turned their attention to the issues likely to influence voters.
These include the cost of living, employment opportunities, taxation, access to essential services and the government’s handling of the economy.
Khalwale’s statement also reflects the increasingly combative political atmosphere, as leaders allied to different camps seek to strengthen their positions before the country heads to the ballot.
President Ruto and his allies have continued to defend the administration’s policies and development agenda, while critics have challenged the government’s performance and questioned whether its promises have translated into meaningful improvements in the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
The senator’s remarks are likely to generate debate among supporters of the government and the opposition, particularly over whether major sporting events can boost the administration’s public image.
As political realignments continue ahead of 2027, the ultimate test will be whether competing leaders can persuade voters that their policies and leadership offer the best path forward for Kenya.
Khalwale’s warning delivers a clear political message: in his view, the excitement surrounding international football will fade, but the choices Kenyans make at the ballot box will determine the country’s leadership.
