Ruto Confirms Plan To Recruit 5000 Police Officers Before 2027 Elections, Reason Revealed
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced plans to recruit an additional 5,000 police officers before the end of 2026 as the government moves to strengthen the country’s security apparatus ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Omollo made the announcement on Friday, October 30, during the opening of Manyatta Police Station in Kisumu, where he appealed to Members of Parliament to support the proposed recruitment through additional budgetary allocations.
The PS said the government had made progress in expanding the National Police Service but acknowledged that the current number of officers remained insufficient to meet the country’s security demands.
He revealed that more than 10,000 police recruits had undergone training and been deployed to different parts of the country over the past ten months.
According to Omollo, the proposed recruitment of another 5,000 officers would build on the recent intake and increase the capacity of the police service to respond to emerging security challenges.
The government is seeking approximately KSh 2 billion to finance the recruitment exercise and support improvements in police officers’ welfare.
The recruitment plans come as security agencies prepare for the 2027 elections, with the Interior Ministry considering measures to strengthen security in areas that could experience political tension.
Omollo said the government was also reviewing police training programmes and introducing further training for serving officers to improve professionalism and service delivery.
The reforms are expected to focus on strengthening officers’ capacity to maintain law and order, protect election infrastructure and manage public gatherings.
Kenya has continued to face challenges in meeting the United Nations’ recommended police-to-population ratio of one officer for every 400 citizens, making additional recruitment an important part of efforts to expand security coverage.
During the Kisumu event, Omollo also urged young people to maintain peace as the country approaches the next General Election, encouraging them to participate in the democratic process through voter registration rather than violence.
The proposed recruitment will require parliamentary approval of the necessary funding before the government can proceed with the exercise.
