“How Can He Do Something Like This, Does Ruto Think Kenyans Are Fools?” Boniface Mwangi Says
Boniface Mwangi has questioned President William Ruto’s decision to open Kenya’s new stadium with a match between two European football giants, arguing that the move raises concerns about the opportunities available to local players.
His remarks have sparked a debate about whether Kenya is giving enough attention to its own sporting talent as it prepares to host major international football events.
Mwangi’s criticism followed Ruto’s announcement that German giants Bayern Munich and Dutch club Ajax would play a friendly match on January 5, 2027, to officially open the Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi, popularly known as Talanta Stadium.
The facility has a planned capacity of 60,000 spectators and is expected to play an important role in Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
In his remarks, Mwangi argued that the government should consider the interests of Kenyan footballers instead of focusing mainly on bringing international clubs to the country.
He questioned the idea of inviting foreign teams to play at a stadium built in Kenya while local stars and aspiring players risk being left on the sidelines.
His comments have brought attention to the need to create more opportunities for young footballers to develop their skills and compete at the highest level.
The debate has also attracted criticism from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who questioned why Kenyan clubs were not given the opportunity to feature in the opening match.
He suggested that established local sides such as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, or even the national team, could have been considered.
His remarks added another dimension to the discussion about local representation and national pride.
Meanwhile, the government has presented the international fixture as an opportunity to showcase Kenya’s new sporting facility and attract global attention ahead of AFCON 2027.
However, Mwangi’s concerns raise a wider question about how the country can balance international sporting events with investment in homegrown talent.
For many football enthusiasts, the success of the new stadium will depend not only on the teams it attracts but also on the opportunities it creates for Kenyan players.
