Duale Reveals Why He Wants Kithure Kindiki to Remain Ruto’s Running Mate in 2027

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has thrown his weight behind Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as President William Ruto’s preferred running mate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Duale’s remarks come amid growing speculation over whether Ruto could retain Kindiki or make changes to his presidential ticket as political realignments intensify.

Speaking on Sunday, October 25, Duale praised Kindiki’s record and compared him favourably with previous holders of the deputy presidency, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka.

He described Kindiki as a decent, highly educated and intelligent leader, arguing that he has performed strongly in the country’s second-highest office.

“Kenya has the best deputy president ever,” Duale said, before praising Kindiki’s character and intelligence.»

The CS also appeared to reject arguments that Kindiki’s political prospects should be limited because he comes from Tharaka-Nithi County.

Duale insisted that Kindiki should be judged on his abilities rather than his regional background, even suggesting that the deputy president could eventually seek the presidency himself.

“Nobody from the mlima can beat Kindiki. Don’t reduce Kindiki to Tharaka,” Duale said, questioning why an intelligent leader from Tharaka-Nithi could not rise to the country’s top political office.

His comments come as Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru openly positions herself for Ruto’s 2027 running mate slot.

Waiguru has argued that she could strengthen Ruto’s re-election campaign by bringing different political strengths and additional support from the Mt Kenya region.

She has also maintained that her interest in the position should not be interpreted as an attack on Kindiki’s performance.

Duale’s intervention could therefore add another layer to the emerging debate over who should accompany Ruto on the 2027 presidential ticket.

For now, his public endorsement presents Kindiki as a strong contender to retain the position, while Waiguru’s ambitions keep the succession debate within Ruto’s camp alive.
