Political Storm Erupts as Gachagua and Kalonzo Lock Horns Over 2027 Presidential Ticket

Differences have emerged within the United Opposition after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka disagreed over when to announce their joint presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

The disagreement came to the fore on Monday when Gachagua hosted Kalonzo at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County for talks aimed at strengthening their political partnership ahead of the elections.Although both leaders want the opposition to unite behind one candidate to challenge President William Ruto, they have different views on the best time to reveal their choice.

Kalonzo is understood to favour an early announcement, arguing that settling the presidential ticket in advance would give the chosen candidate enough time to organise a nationwide campaign, attract supporters and present the coalition as a government ready to take over power.

An early decision could also help the opposition demonstrate unity and give voters a clear picture of the leadership team it intends to present in 2027.

However, Gachagua is pushing for a later announcement, maintaining that revealing the candidate too early could expose the individual to political pressure and possible harassment from the government.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party leader reportedly prefers concentrating on building political support and strengthening the coalition before deciding who should lead the presidential race.Gachagua has also pointed to the 2002 National Rainbow Coalition arrangement, which saw the opposition settle on Mwai Kibaki as its presidential candidate only a few months before the election.

The coalition went on to defeat the ruling party at the time.

The debate has attracted other opposition figures, exposing different opinions on how the alliance should prepare for the next election.

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi has supported Kalonzo’s position, arguing that an early agreement would help bring opposition supporters together behind one candidate.

Meanwhile, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has called for a transparent and inclusive process, insisting that the presidential candidate should not be selected through private negotiations among a few political leaders.

Despite their differences, Gachagua and Kalonzo have maintained that their political relationship remains intact. Both leaders are seeking a united opposition capable of mounting a serious challenge against Ruto in 2027.

The timing dispute now presents a major test for the coalition as its leaders work to balance individual ambitions with the need for a common political strategy.
