No First-Time MP Has Become President on His First Attempt – Wetang’ula on Sifuna’s Bid
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has weighed in on Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, arguing that there is no shortcut to becoming Kenya’s Head of State.
Wetang’ula maintained that political leaders must build their careers and gain experience before seeking the country’s highest office. His remarks come as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“There is no miracle of someone becoming an MP today and becoming President tomorrow,” Wetang’ula said, in comments directed at the debate surrounding Sifuna’s presidential bid.
The Speaker’s remarks have drawn attention to Sifuna’s growing political profile, particularly following his differences with sections of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and his association with the Linda Mwananchi movement.
Sifuna, who represents Nairobi County in the Senate, has increasingly featured in discussions about the country’s political future. His outspoken criticism of President William Ruto’s administration has also earned him attention among Kenyans following opposition politics.
However, Wetang’ula’s comments suggest that experience, political organisation and sustained public support remain important considerations for anyone hoping to become president.
Kenya’s political history shows that several successful presidential candidates spent years holding different leadership positions before winning the top seat. This has often shaped arguments about whether aspiring presidents should first gain experience in other elective offices.
Nevertheless, the race towards 2027 is expected to bring new political alliances and unexpected developments as leaders position themselves to challenge Ruto.
Sifuna’s supporters may view his growing popularity and public engagements as signs of his political potential, while his critics could argue that he needs more time to establish himself nationally.
Wetang’ula’s remarks have therefore added another dimension to the discussion about Sifuna’s ambitions and the requirements for presidential leadership.
The debate is likely to continue as political leaders assess their options ahead of the next election.
