MP Babu Owino has strongly criticized the Nairobi County Government over regulatory failures following the catastrophic collapse of a multi-storey building under construction along 9th Street in Eastleigh.

​The incident has triggered widespread panic and emergency rescue operations led by multi-agency teams, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), as several people remain feared trapped under the heavy debris.

​Addressing the disaster, the legislator demanded a transparent, independent investigation into how structural permits are approved and whether county inspection officers accepted bribes to bypass safety regulations.

​He emphasized that systemic corruption and professional negligence directly endanger urban residents, noting that human lives must never be sacrificed for corrupt motives.

​Governor Johnson Sakaja acknowledged that the collapsed structure lacked a valid occupation certificate, though he pointed out legal loopholes where current penalties for zoning and construction violations remain lenient on rogue developers.

​Authorities have since evacuated adjacent compromised buildings and cordoned off the zone, intensifying pressure on urban planning authorities to overhaul oversight mechanisms across Nairobi.
