Just Days After Meeting Sifuna, Gachagua Receives This Unexpected News from Western — Details

A fresh political debate has emerged over the relationship between the Luhya community and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following remarks attributed to Wangwe.

“WALUHYA, hatuweziomba GACHAGUA msamaha hiyo ni mambo ya SIFUNA peke yake,” Wangwe reportedly said, making it clear that he does not believe the Luhya community should apologise to Gachagua.

The remarks come at a time when political leaders are stepping up consultations and building alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua recently met Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County. The meeting attracted attention as opposition leaders explore possible partnerships to challenge President William Ruto in the next election.

Sifuna has defended his decision to engage Gachagua, arguing that political cooperation should not be restricted by regional or ethnic boundaries. However, the meeting has drawn criticism from some leaders who question whether the emerging relationship reflects the political ideals associated with the late Raila Odinga.

Wangwe’s statement appears to draw a distinction between Sifuna’s political engagement with Gachagua and the position he believes the wider Luhya community should take.

The remarks also come amid growing competition among opposition leaders seeking support from different communities as they consider how to approach the 2027 presidential race.

Other political figures, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, are also associated with discussions about possible opposition cooperation.

Although the talks have generated considerable political attention, the opposition has yet to settle on a single presidential candidate.

Wangwe’s comments are therefore likely to add another voice to the debate over who should negotiate political alliances and whether individual leaders can speak for an entire community.

As the campaigns draw closer, Kenyans will be watching how these disagreements shape political relationships and the search for a united opposition.

Do you think Sifuna should make political decisions independently, or should he first consider the position of his community?
