Untold Story: Why Ruto and Key Dignitaries Were Uncomfortable at Today’s Mashujaa Day Celebrations

The unfinished roofing at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret became a major talking point during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after President William Ruto, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other leaders were left exposed to the scorching sun.

The national event brought together top government officials, invited guests and members of the public. However, the incomplete roof meant that some people at the stadium had to endure the heat as the ceremony continued.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who attended as the chief guest, was captured using a piece of paper to shield his face from the direct sunlight. President Ruto was also seen squinting while watching military aircraft perform an air show above the stadium.

Other leaders at the VIP podium, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and First Lady Rachel Ruto, also experienced the uncomfortable conditions. Some guests in the stands used umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun.

The scenes drew attention to the state of the stadium, which was still undergoing renovation ahead of the national celebrations.

According to reports, Kipchoge Keino Stadium was about 78 per cent complete as of October 12. More than 659 workers were reportedly involved in the construction, with roofing installation among the remaining tasks.

Despite the unfinished work, the government proceeded with the celebrations at the Eldoret facility, which has a seating capacity of approximately 15,000 people. Additional arrangements were also made to accommodate more attendees.

The remaining construction work is expected to continue after Mashujaa Day, with full completion targeted for the end of December 2026.

The situation has placed the stadium’s construction progress in the spotlight, especially because the national event brought together Kenya’s top leaders and a visiting head of government.

Mashujaa Day is held every year on October 20 to honour people who have contributed to Kenya’s independence and development.

Do you think the government should have completed the stadium roofing before hosting such a major national event?
