The Ministry of Health on Tuesday, October 20, confirmed the ninth Ebola case in Kenya, saying all infections remain linked to the first patient, who travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Health Director General Patrick Amoth said the latest patient was a known contact of the index case and was already in quarantine when symptoms developed. He added that there was no evidence of transmission outside the cluster.

The ministry has traced and quarantined 134 of the 135 identified contacts, although the number could rise as more cases are confirmed. The government has also distributed emergency medical supplies to 12 very high-risk counties and 16 high-risk counties to strengthen detection and management of suspected infections.

The supplies include protective equipment, diagnostic kits, thermometers and sample collection materials. A dedicated laboratory has also been established at Kenyatta National Hospital’s Infectious Disease Unit to handle routine Ebola tests and prevent disruption of other laboratory services.

Amoth said quarantine and treatment centres were being monitored to ensure safety, adding that no infections had been reported within quarantine facilities. Kenya has not imposed travel, trade or public gathering restrictions.

Meanwhile, the first group of contacts placed in quarantine on October 6 is expected to return home from October 25 after completing 21 days without symptoms. The ministry urged the public to report suspected symptoms promptly and welcome those cleared after monitoring.

ā€œThe Ministry has urged Kenyans to remain vigilant, follow public health guidelines and report suspected Ebola symptoms to the nearest health facility or through the toll-free line 719.ā€

Meanwhile, here are news stories making headlines on Opera News today;

President William Ruto has announced a series of proposed economic measures targeting taxes, land ownership and youth unemployment in a move that could bring relief to thousands of Kenyans struggling with the high cost of living.

Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Ruto outlined four major proposals aimed at putting more money into workers’ pockets, reducing property transaction costs and expanding employment opportunities for young people.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna faces a defining political dilemma as opposition leaders debate whether he should challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election or support a more experienced candidate.

The debate has intensified following Sifuna’s meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on October 20, shortly after the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader returned from the United States.

The political confrontation between President William Ruto and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has taken a dramatic turn after County Commissioner Allasow Hussein ordered local administrators to stop saluting the governor and according him official courtesies.

Hussein issued the directive during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Trans Nzoia County on Tuesday, October 20, escalating tensions between the national government and the county leadership.
