Ghana’s New Cedi Notes: Bank of Ghana Clarifies What to Expect Ahead of November Launch
The Bank of Ghana has clarified several issues concerning the forthcoming Heritage Series of cedi banknotes amid increasing discussions on social media about the redesigned currency.
According to the central bank, the Heritage Series is simply an upgrade of Ghana’s current banknotes and does not amount to a redenomination of the cedi.
All eight existing denominations, from GH¢1 through GH¢200, will be covered by the exercise. These include GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200. The Bank of Ghana has stated that the new series will not introduce any denomination above GH¢200.
The upgraded notes will come with improved designs, stronger security features and greater durability. The new appearance is also expected to incorporate elements that celebrate Ghana’s history and national identity.
The central bank explained that the changes are aimed at making the currency more resistant to counterfeiting, while also reducing the long-term costs associated with producing and maintaining banknotes.
There have also been claims that the redesigned cedi notes would be changed from cotton to polymer. However, the Bank of Ghana has clarified that this is not the case. The new notes will continue to be made from a reinforced cotton substrate.
Another important point is that the arrival of the Heritage Series will not invalidate the notes currently being used by the public. Existing banknotes will remain legal tender and can be used together with the new versions after their introduction.
As a result, Ghanaians will not be required to exchange their existing money immediately once the redesigned notes enter circulation.
The Heritage Series is expected to be officially unveiled on November 3, 2026, at Bank Square in Accra.
The announcement has sparked curiosity across the country, with members of the public particularly interested in the final designs, security features and the historical figures or national symbols that will appear on the notes.
The Bank of Ghana has advised the public to follow information released through official channels and disregard misleading reports about the planned currency upgrade.
