Waititu’s Wife Susan Wangari Remanded at Lang’ata Women’s Prison After High Court Ruling

Susan Wangari, the wife of former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, has been remanded at Lang’ata Women’s GK Prison following a High Court decision that overturned her acquittal in a money laundering case.

The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, by Milimani Anti-Corruption High Court Judge Rose Ougo, who set aside the earlier acquittals of Wangari, Waititu and their co-accused on money laundering charges.

According to the court, the four had previously been acquitted by a lower court, but Justice Ougo ruled that the decision was erroneous and allowed the State’s cross-appeal challenging their acquittals.

“The acquittals are set aside,” the judge ruled.

Following the decision, Wangari was ordered to remain in custody at Lang’ata Women’s GK Prison as the case proceeds to the next stage.

The court directed that she, Waititu and the other accused persons be presented before Milimani Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa on Monday, October 19, 2026, for mitigation and sentencing on the money laundering charges.

Mitigation allows convicted persons and their legal representatives to present circumstances that may be considered by the court when determining the appropriate sentence.

Justice Ougo explained that the matter would be returned to the Chief Magistrate’s Court because the High Court was not exercising original sentencing jurisdiction over the money laundering counts.

The ruling marks a significant development in the legal challenges facing the former Kiambu governor and his wife, who have been linked to a high-profile corruption case.

The proceedings are separate from the court’s consideration of the underlying corruption allegations involving the alleged irregular procurement of road construction works in Kiambu County.

The State’s successful cross-appeal means that the earlier acquittals on the money laundering charges can no longer stand, paving the way for sentencing proceedings.

The case has attracted considerable public attention because of Waititu’s former position as Kiambu governor and the financial allegations surrounding the wider investigation.

Wangari’s detention is expected to continue until the next court appearance, when the magistrate will consider mitigation and proceed with sentencing in accordance with the court’s directions.

The October 19 appearance will therefore be a crucial moment for Wangari and her co-accused as they await the next steps in the judicial process.

The latest decision underscores the role of appellate courts in reviewing lower court rulings and determining whether the law was correctly applied.

Further developments are expected when the accused persons return to court for mitigation and sentencing.
