Sent Money to the Wrong Till or Paybill? Here Is How to Get It Back to M-Pesa
Safaricom M-Pesa customers who accidentally send money to the wrong Paybill or Buy Goods Till number can request a reversal through the telecommunications company’s customer care channels. However, the recovery process requires additional verification and may depend on the merchant’s cooperation.
Mistakes can happen when customers enter incorrect numbers while paying for goods, settling bills or making business transactions. Unlike money sent to an individual M-Pesa user, payments made through Paybill and Till numbers may require Safaricom to contact the receiving business before a refund can be processed.
Customers seeking assistance should first keep the original M-Pesa confirmation message. The transaction code, amount sent, date of payment and incorrect Paybill or Till number are important details that help Safaricom trace the transaction.
One option is to contact Safaricom customer care by dialling 100 or 234 and explain the mistake. The company can investigate the payment, contact the receiving merchant and facilitate discussions on whether the money can be returned.
Customers can also seek assistance through Zuri, Safaricom’s WhatsApp customer service assistant, using the number 0722 000 100. They should provide the transaction details and explain that the payment was sent to the wrong business number.
According to the information provided by Safaricom, a refund may be processed within 72 hours if the necessary checks are completed and the merchant agrees to the reversal. However, the timeline is not a guarantee that every request will succeed. Some Paybill payments may require customers to contact the receiving organisation directly, depending on its reversal procedures.
Safaricom has also outlined the responsibilities of businesses receiving payments through M-Pesa Business Tills. The company may contact merchants through its official communication channels to notify them of a reversal request and seek permission to return the money.
A merchant who refuses to return money received in error may face legal consequences. The published guidance cited in the report warns of a possible two-year jail term, a fine of KSh200,000, or both. Customers whose cases remain unresolved may be advised to seek assistance from law enforcement.
The process differs from reversing money sent directly to another Safaricom M-Pesa customer. For eligible person-to-person transfers, customers can forward the original transaction message to 456 to request a reversal. This option is subject to Safaricom’s checks and conditions, including a 24-hour request window, and does not apply to Paybill or Till payments.
To reduce the risk of losing money, customers are advised to confirm the business name displayed before completing a transaction. Checking the Paybill or Till number and the payment details before pressing the confirmation button can help prevent costly mistakes.
