Man United Handed Double Injury Scare Ahead of Champions League Clash

According to a report by London Evening Standard on Monday October 12, 2026, Manchester United have suffered a potential double injury setback after Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo were absent from training ahead of their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

The pair are now doubts for Tuesday’s encounter at the Metropolitano Stadium as Michael Carrick attempts to end United’s four-game winless run in all competitions.

Shaw’s fitness has become a major concern following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend. The left-back started the match but was substituted in stoppage time, with Ayden Heaven replacing him.

Carrick did not provide an immediate explanation for the substitution. However, footage circulating on social media showed Shaw limping as he left Old Trafford, raising concerns about his availability for the trip to Spain.

The 31-year-old previously missed United’s Champions League victory over Sabah last month because of an injury. His absence from Monday’s training session has increased the possibility that he could miss another European fixture.

United could face additional difficulties at left-back if Shaw is ruled out. Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are also unavailable after picking up injuries while representing their respective countries during the international break.

Mainoo’s situation has also raised concerns within the club. The midfielder completed the entire match against Tottenham but was subsequently absent from training before the Atletico Madrid encounter.

His fitness will be closely monitored as Carrick prepares his team for a crucial European test. United will be desperate to secure a positive result after struggling to find consistency in recent matches.

However, there was encouraging news regarding several defensive options. Matthijs de Ligt participated in training alongside Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot, increasing hopes that he could return to action.

De Ligt’s potential availability would provide Carrick with another defensive option ahead of the demanding fixture.

The Manchester United manager is expected to provide a comprehensive update on his squad during his pre-match press conference. Supporters will be waiting for confirmation regarding Shaw and Mainoo’s conditions before the team travels to Madrid.

United must now assess their available options carefully as they seek to overcome Atletico Madrid and revive their European campaign.
