Dangote Refinery Targets 1.4 Million Barrels Per Day Capacity by 2029

According to a report by Punch Newspapers on Monday, October 12, 2026, Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery is targeting a major expansion of its refining capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2029, according to the refinery’s president, Aliko Dangote.

The planned expansion would significantly increase the facility’s processing capacity and strengthen its position in the global petroleum industry. It could also enhance Nigeria’s ability to meet domestic fuel demand while increasing the potential for petroleum product exports to international markets.

The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State, was established to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. Nigeria has historically relied heavily on imported fuel despite being one of Africa’s major crude oil producers.

Increasing the refinery’s capacity could help improve the availability of refined petroleum products, including petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, depending on production requirements and market demand.

The expansion also comes amid efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s energy sector, improve industrial production and reduce the pressure that fuel imports place on the country’s foreign exchange reserves.

A larger refining capacity could create additional opportunities across the petroleum value chain, including crude oil supply, transportation, storage and distribution. It could also support employment and related industrial activities.

However, achieving the 2029 target would depend on the successful implementation of expansion plans, access to adequate crude oil supplies, financing, infrastructure and the ability to maintain efficient operations.

The refinery’s projected growth is expected to attract attention from international energy markets because of its potential influence on fuel supply across Africa and other regions.

If completed as planned, the expansion would represent a major development for Nigeria’s refining industry and could further strengthen the country’s role in the international petroleum market.
