“Vaa Vizuri” Truphena Muthoni’s Choice of Dressing On Mazingira Day Sparks Mixed Reactions
Environmental activist Truphena Muthoni has sparked mixed reactions online after sharing a photo of herself addressing an audience during Mazingira Day on Saturday, October 10.
The photo attracted attention from Kenyans, with some social media users focusing on her choice of clothing during the event.
Muthoni wore a short skirt that ended above her knees, prompting some people to question whether the outfit was suitable for an occasion centred on environmental conservation.
Others wondered how she managed to plant trees while dressed in the skirt. They were quick to tell her to have a descent dressing especially where she would meet elders and government officials.
However, some Kenyans commended her for continuing to use her public profile to promote tree growing and environmental protection. The reactions came as the country marked Mazingira Day on October 10, with tree planting and environmental conservation activities taking place in different parts of Kenya.
Muthoni joined leaders and locals at Thogotho TTC in Kiambu for the event. Muthoni became widely known for using tree-hugging challenges to draw attention to environmental conservation.
Her campaign gained national attention in February 2025 when she hugged a tree at Michuki Memorial Park in Nairobi for 48 hours and 22 minutes.
The challenge helped her reach a wider audience, with many Kenyans praising her determination to promote the protection of trees, particularly indigenous species.
She later undertook another challenge in Nyeri County, where she hugged an American ash tree for 72 hours in December 2025. Guinness World Records recognised her achievement in January 2026, bringing her further international attention.
Since then, Muthoni has continued using public appearances and environmental campaigns to encourage people to take tree planting and conservation seriously.
President William Ruto led the national celebrations at Elgon Downs Farm in Endebess, Trans Nzoia County, where the government organised tree-planting activities as part of its wider campaign to increase the country’s tree cover.
