“You Are the One to Call Me” Natembeya Tells Ruto as He Explains Protocol During Visits to Kitale

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has said President William Ruto should contact him before visiting the county, insisting that he is an elected governor and not a national government administrator who reports directly to the Head of State.

Natembeya made the remarks while explaining the protocol he believes should guide presidential visits to Trans Nzoia. He said his position as governor means that arrangements for such visits should involve his office rather than expecting him to be available without prior communication.

“Ruto, I am not the County or the Regional Commissioner; I am a governor. I am not answerable to you,” Natembeya said, drawing a distinction between his elected position and that of national government administrators.

The governor further argued that if the President intends to visit Trans Nzoia, he should contact him beforehand so that arrangements can be made. Natembeya said he would be willing to receive Ruto but maintained that he should not be expected to appear without being informed in advance.

“If you want to come to Trans Nzoia, you are the one to call and ask me to receive you. I’ll be there, but you cannot just land unexpectedly and expect me to be there,” he stated.

His comments highlight the question of protocol and communication between county governments and the national government during official visits. Governors are elected leaders responsible for their counties, while county commissioners and regional commissioners serve within the national government administrative structure.

Natembeya’s remarks are likely to draw attention to the relationship between county leadership and the presidency, particularly regarding how official visits are coordinated. His position is that prior communication is necessary and that his office should be involved when the President plans to visit the county.
