Pastor Dorcas raises concern over boy child crisis in Kenya

Pastor Dorcas Rigathi has sounded an alarm over the boy child crisis in Kenya, warning that alcohol and substance abuse is wiping out a generation of young men.

Speaking during a meeting with ladies in Worcester, Massachusetts in the United States, Rev. Dorcas painted a grim picture of the situation back home.

She said that by the time she left office, half of university students were struggling with alcohol and drug abuse, a crisis she says has led to at least ten students committing suicide in universities daily.

Rev. Dorcas stated that families are being left devastated, with parents who take their children to school to earn degrees receiving caskets instead.

She noted that ninety percent of those affected are boys.

Rev. Dorcas pointed to Central Kenya where she said pastors are overwhelmed by weekly burials of young men who die after drinking without eating.

The former Second Lady linked alcohol abuse to rising road accidents. She said many matatu and boda boda drivers operate under the influence of alcohol, causing deaths and lifelong disabilities among sober road users, and filling boda boda wards in hospitals across the country.

She added that substance abuse has fueled crime and gender-based violence, leading to overcrowded prisons where ninety percent of inmates are men. This, she said, leaves behind struggling mothers, widows and orphans and children who cannot access education.

Rev. Dorcas recounted that her office had supported over two thousand people who lost their sight or limbs after consuming illicit brews by providing assistive devices.

She called on mothers in the diaspora to act as agents of change, urging them to speak to their sons and husbands and to sensitize schools in Kenya on the dangers of drug abuse.

She emphasized that addressing the boy child crisis is key to protecting the girl child, as the death of men leaves behind widowed women and orphaned children.
