Nairobi residents were left shaken after a passenger train collided with a Githurai-bound bus at a railway crossing, causing significant damage and renewing concerns about safety at busy crossings.

The accident happened at around 6:30 p.m. as passenger train number 9306 travelled from Nairobi Central Station towards Ruiru. The train was approaching the crossing when a bus travelling from Nairobi’s Central Business District towards Githurai attempted to cross the railway line.

CCTV footage that later circulated online captured the moment the train crashed into the driver’s side of the bus. The footage appeared to show that the bus had not fully cleared the tracks before the train reached the crossing.

The impact pushed the bus along the railway line and also affected a nearby parked vehicle. A structure close to the tracks was reportedly damaged, while dust and smoke filled the area immediately after the collision.

Witnesses and members of the public gathered around the scene as they tried to assess the extent of the damage. There was some relief when the bus driver was seen emerging from the heavily damaged vehicle shortly after the crash.

Initial reports indicated that no fatalities were recorded and that there were no immediate reports of life-threatening injuries. However, details about the condition of everyone involved were still emerging.

The crash has once again raised concerns about railway safety in densely populated areas such as Githurai, where motorists and trains frequently share busy crossings. The incident has also prompted renewed calls for greater caution whenever vehicles approach railway lines, particularly when an approaching train is nearby.
