Ramaphosa Responds as Immigration Protests and Unrest Grip Durban
President Cyril Ramaphosa has responded to the growing immigration-related unrest in Durban, assuring South Africans that the government is working to restore calm and protect everyone living in the country.
In a statement reported by SABC News, Ramaphosa said the security cluster was actively dealing with the situation in Durban. He stressed that the government remained committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all people in South Africa.
His remarks come after violent protests linked to immigration tensions erupted in Durban and Soweto, leaving vehicles torched, buildings damaged and businesses looted. The unrest has raised fresh concerns about public safety and the treatment of foreign nationals.
According to SABC News, 14 vehicles were set alight during Thursday’s unrest in Durban’s central business district, while several buildings were also reportedly set on fire.
Police said the violence followed an alleged assault involving foreign nationals and a participant in a march. Three foreign nationals were arrested in connection with the alleged assault, although no arrests had initially been made in connection with the wider public violence.
The situation has prompted increased attention from law enforcement authorities, with senior police officials expected to meet local leadership to discuss the unrest and the response to it. <escape>[1]</escape>
Government faces pressure over immigration
The protests are linked to public anger over asylum applications and concerns about undocumented immigration. Tensions intensified following a Constitutional Court ruling concerning access to the asylum application process.
The Department of Home Affairs subsequently withdrew an operational directive on asylum applications after refugee reception offices experienced significant pressure. However, the court ruling itself remains in place, and applying for asylum does not automatically grant refugee status. <escape>[2]</escape>
Authorities have urged communities to express their concerns through lawful channels rather than resorting to violence, intimidation or the destruction of property.
Ramaphosa’s assurance places renewed focus on the government’s responsibility to maintain law and order while protecting the rights and safety of everyone in South Africa.
As authorities continue responding to the unrest, residents and business owners will be watching closely to see whether security measures can prevent further violence and restore stability in affected areas.
