Meet Desmond Tutu’s Daughter Who Married A Female Partner
After marrying her female partner in 2016, the daughter of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the South African winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, decided to step down from her position as a priest in the South African Anglican Church.
Marceline van Furth, a professor of paediatric infectious diseases at Amstedam, was Mpho Tutu’s wife. Mpho Tutu-van Furth was one among her students. Eighteen years ago, in the United States of America, she was ordained as a priest.
The fact that Mpho Tutu gave up her licence to preach led to rumours that she acknowledged the canon of the South African Church, which specifies that marriage must take place between one man and one woman. As a result, Mpho Tutu is said to have accepted this legislation.
Concerns around same-sex marriage and the ordination of gay and lesbian people as priests posed a threat to the unity of the worldwide Anglican Church because of its approval of weddings between people with the same sexual orientation.
Desmond Tutu, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his work against apartheid, was a supporter of homosexual rights and same-sex marriage.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu was quoted in a newspaper as saying that he would not go to a heaven that tolerates homophobia but that he does favour gay and lesbian marriage.
