Young South African scientists are developing technology driven solutions to address the country’s growing water and sanitation challenges amid increasing climate pressures.
The research will be presented at the Academy of Science of South Africa’s Annual Young Scientist Conference, taking place from 13 to 15 September 2026 at Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha Campus.
Held under the theme “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” the conference brings together emerging researchers working on water security, environmental sustainability and inclusive development.
Projects on the programme include AquaGuard, a smart robotic system designed to identify water leaks and help prevent illegal connections in informal settlements.
Other researchers are developing technologies to remove pharmaceutical residues, heavy metals and other contaminants from water. Remote sensing, geographic information systems and artificial intelligence are also being used to improve groundwater management and monitor water resources.
The research programme covers water filtration, wastewater treatment, contamination detection, groundwater security, water monitoring and sustainable sanitation. It also includes applications of nanotechnology, biotechnology and digital systems.
The conference will examine the relationship between water security and climate change. Research topics include drought, extreme weather, climate smart agriculture, river biodiversity and the resilience of communities and ecosystems that depend on water resources.
Studies involving smallholder farmers, non perennial rivers, rainwater harvesting and climate adaptation are also included in the programme.
A dedicated Science for Policy in Action session will focus on translating research into policy recommendations. Participants will work in groups to address a practical policy challenge before presenting their recommendations through a simulated Cabinet briefing and panel discussion.
“Young scientists have an important role to play in shaping solutions to the challenges facing South Africa and our continent,” said Prof Himla Soodyall, executive officer of the Academy of Science of South Africa.
“This conference gives them a space to share their research, challenge ideas and explore how science can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
The opening programme includes Prof Thandi Mgwebi, vice chancellor of Walter Sisulu University; Prof Abel Ramoelo of the South African National Space Agency; Prof Maurine Musie, co chair of the South African Young Academy of Science; Ms Lusizo Makhubela, chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation in the National Assembly; and Prof Albert Modi, executive dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Walter Sisulu University.
Delegates will also visit a water treatment plant to examine how research and innovation are applied in water treatment and management.
The conference is supported by Walter Sisulu University, the South African National Space Agency, the South African Young Academy of Science and OR Tambo District Municipality.
The event highlights the scale of South Africa’s water challenges and the growing contribution of young scientists to the development of practical, climate resilient solutions.
