Ghana expands visa-free travel network to 3 new destinations, including Maldives

The Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the new arrangements in a public notice dated September 8, 2026, saying the agreements followed their ratification by Ghana’s Parliament.

The ministry said eligible travellers can enter the three countries “without obtaining an entry visa,” subject to the conditions of the respective agreements.

The new arrangements cover holders of ordinary, service and diplomatic passports, giving Ghanaian travellers additional visa-free destinations across Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.

Ghanaian passport holders can stay in the Maldives for up to 30 days, while the same 30-day limit applies to travel to Zambia.

The agreement with Antigua and Barbuda allows Ghanaian travellers to stay for up to 90 days, giving it the longest visa-free period among the three new destinations.

The ministry described the move as part of its efforts to facilitate the international movement of Ghanaian citizens and strengthen the country’s bilateral relationships.

It also cautioned that visa-free access does not remove other immigration requirements.

“Visa-free entry does not exempt them from complying with the immigration and entry requirements of the country of destination,” the ministry said.

Travellers must have a valid passport and any other documents required by the destination authorities, while those planning to work, study, reside or undertake activities requiring specific authorisation must obtain the appropriate permits.

The ministry also advised travellers to confirm current entry, health and other requirements before departure, noting that such rules “may be subject to change.”

The latest agreements add to Ghana’s growing network of bilateral visa-waiver arrangements as the country seeks to improve mobility for its citizens and deepen diplomatic and economic ties with partner countries.

The Maldives agreement gives Ghanaian travellers access to a major tourism destination in the Indian Ocean, while Zambia expands visa-free mobility within southern Africa. Antigua and Barbuda, meanwhile, provides access to the Caribbean under a 90-day arrangement.
