Afrobeat singer Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko, also known as Adekunle Gold, has said Nigeria does not practise true democracy, while discussing the recently held Osun State governorship election and the role of Nigerian celebrities in political affairs.

Speaking in a recent episode of the One54 Podcast posted on YouTube, he discussed a post by his colleague, Davido, in which the singer appealed to United States President Donald Trump to pay attention to the conduct of the Osun State governorship election. The One54 episode was published on September 9, 2026.

He linked Davido’s appeal to broader concerns about Nigeria’s democratic process, arguing that the country does not practise what he considers true democracy.

The singer’s comments came during a discussion on Nigerian politics and economic progress, with the conversation touching on how political developments in the country affect citizens and the role public figures can play in drawing attention to such issues.

He also referenced the involvement of entertainers in political conversations, particularly when issues surrounding elections and governance generate public concern.

His comments followed the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election, which was won by the incumbent governor and Accord Party candidate, Ademola Adeleke.

The election and its outcome attracted reactions from politicians, civil society groups and members of the public, with issues surrounding Nigeria’s electoral and democratic processes remaining subjects of public debate.

For him, the discussion provided an opportunity to express his concerns about the state of democracy in the country and to connect Davido’s intervention with wider questions about governance and political accountability.

The remarks were made during his appearance on the One54 Podcast, where he discussed different aspects of his career and personal experiences, alongside issues relating to Nigerian politics, the economy and the music industry.
