A magistrate’s court in Hohoe, Ghana, found 31-year-old pub owner Christabel Afonorfe and her 19-year-old employee Theodora Kornu guilty of selling expired drinks and sanitary violations. Both women pleaded guilty, MyJoyOnline reports.

Court decision

Afonorfe, the owner of Christabel Pub and Bar Ltd, was fined 600 Ghanaian cedis. If she fails to pay the fine, she will have to serve one month in prison. The court ordered Kornu to sign a three-year bond to be of good behavior.

The case was heard by a court chaired by Lambert Keriba, a judge substituting for a colleague. The prosecution was represented by the officer in charge of prosecutions and environmental health analyst Daniel Dotse Eklo.

Inspection findings

According to Eklo, during a routine inspection on July 14, sanitary inspectors found that the establishment was selling expired drinks to customers, dumping rubbish behind the premises, and selling drinks as well as operating the pub and bar without a medical fitness certificate.

After the inspection, the women were informed of the requirements, issued a notice to remedy the violations, and advised to visit the environmental office for a medical examination in order to continue trading. During a follow-up inspection on July 22, according to the prosecution, the notice had not been complied with. The expired goods were seized as evidence.
