In Ghana’s Kumawu District, Ernest Yaw Anim, the Member of Parliament for Sekyere Kumawu and chair of the parliamentary Human Rights Committee, held a meeting of representatives of local institutions and communities. Participants discussed protecting children’s rights and combating child labour.
Participation of communities and state institutions
The meeting was organised in partnership with the International Justice Mission (IJM). Representatives of the Kumawu Traditional Council, the local council of churches, the Muslim community, the Social Welfare Department, the National Commission for Civic Education, and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice took part.
Participants reviewed the problems faced by children in the district and also discussed cooperation among traditional leaders, religious organisations, state institutions, and community leaders to protect children’s rights and well-being, MyJoyOnline reports.

Call to respond to violations
Anim called on participants, including local assembly members and community leaders, to more actively identify and address situations in which children are involved in harmful forms of labour. He specifically mentioned activities related to illegal mining.
IJM community engagement specialist Richard Akwasi Offei supported the meeting and stressed the need for closer cooperation between institutions responsible for child protection, including the Social Welfare Department and traditional authorities. Desmond Azemeyuo, director of the district office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, urged residents to report suspected human rights violations and child abuse.
