Rechael Okonkwo’s Nkoli Mega Carnival provides free healthcare to Nsukka residents

Nollywood actress, Rechael Okonkwo, popularly known as Nkoli Nwa Nsukka, has provided free medical care to over 5,000 residents during the eighth edition of her yearly Nkoli Mega Carnival in Nsukka, Enugu State,
 
The medical outreach, organised in partnership with the Franklin Junior Foundation, brought together doctors, nurses, laboratory personnel and other healthcare professionals to attend to residents with various health concerns. Beneficiaries received free consultations, medications, wheelchairs, walking aids and reading glasses, while patients requiring further treatment were referred to hospitals,
 
Speaking on the initiative, Director of Programmes at the Franklin Junior Foundation, David Ofogba, said the foundation partnered with Rechael to bring accessible healthcare to residents who may otherwise struggle to afford basic medical services.   According to Ofogba, the outreach had attended to more than 5,000 patients, with those requiring specialised care referred for further treatment.
 
“The most striking thing for us is seeing the needs of the needy being met, making them happy and giving them hope in life,” Ofogba said.
 
He noted that the outreach had also exposed the extent to which some residents struggle to access basic healthcare, making the intervention particularly important.
 
For Rechael, the carnival is the culmination of a personal journey that began long before she became a household name. Her commitment to giving back is rooted in her childhood experience of losing her father at 13 and experiencing firsthand what it means to grow up without financial resources or influential connections.
 
That experience, she said, shaped her understanding of vulnerability and strengthened her resolve to ensure that other people, particularly children and families with limited means, have access to opportunities and support.
 
Her message through the carnival is simple but deeply personal: a difficult beginning should not become a life sentence.
 
“Your background shouldn’t determine your future. With determination, you can make it,” the actress said.
 
The eighth edition was also significant because it marked the return of the carnival after a two-year break. The last edition was held in 2023, with rising costs making it difficult for the annual celebration to continue on its usual Easter Sunday date.
 
The return also came with a significant expansion of the carnival’s social impact. For the first time, a medical outreach became part of the programme, through a partnership with the Franklin Junior Foundation in the United States.
 
The foundation, according to the actress, had observed the community-focused work surrounding the carnival and decided to support its expansion into healthcare.
 
One of the medical practitioners at the outreach, Dr. Chinonso Gabriel, said he participated in the programme to help address the healthcare needs of residents. He identified malaria and glaucoma among the conditions encountered during the exercise, while patients requiring additional medical attention were referred for further care.
 
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the intervention, particularly for the relief of receiving treatment and medication without the financial burden that often comes with healthcare.
 
The carnival’s impact extended beyond healthcare. Five hundred vulnerable widows received food items and other relief materials, including rice, tomato paste, noodles, wrappers, children’s clothing, school bags and writing materials.
 
Children were also placed at the centre of the initiative through an educational quiz, with bicycles presented to participating children. The gesture was designed to reinforce the importance of education and encourage young people to take their studies seriously.
 
For the actress, these interventions represent different expressions of the same purpose: identifying needs within her community and using whatever resources are available to respond to them.
