In Ghana, Janet Nabla, a candidate seeking nomination from the People’s National Party, criticized Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie over his frequent public appearances and participation in events attended by representatives of the ruling National Democratic Congress. According to MyJoyOnline, Nabla believes such contacts may affect public perceptions of the political neutrality of the judiciary.
Allegations concerning neutrality
Nabla compared Baffoe-Bonnie’s frequent public appearances to MTN, saying that she sees him at many events. She referred to his presence at football events and funerals of people connected to the NDC.

In Nabla’s view, such events are political in nature. She questioned whether such conduct is consistent with the expected neutrality and independence of the office of chief justice.
Public discussion
Nabla’s comments came amid public discussions of recent events outside the court that Baffoe-Bonnie attended, as well as his remarks during visits to state institutions. Nabla also disagreed with claims that these appearances should not be viewed through a political lens.
