Kenya Airways Acting Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Capt. George Kamal has resigned, ending a tenure of just over eight months at the helm of the national carrier.
Kamal, who took over as Acting CEO on December 16, 2025, cited personal reasons for his resignation. He will remain at Kenya Airways for a 30-day transition period before formally leaving on September 30, 2026.
The Kenya Airways Board has appointed the airline’s Company Secretary and Director of Legal Services and Regulatory Compliance, Habil Waswani, as Acting Group Managing Director and CEO from September 15. The Board has also begun the process of recruiting a substantive CEO.
Departure comes amid financial pressure
Kamal’s departure comes at a difficult time for Kenya Airways, which is continuing with its turnaround strategy amid deepening financial losses and operational challenges.

The airline recently reported a Ksh16.1 billion net loss for the first half of 2026, despite recording growth in total income. Rising fuel and maintenance costs have continued to put pressure on the national carrier’s finances.
Kamal’s tenure and handover
Kamal previously served as Kenya Airways Chief Operating Officer for three years before being appointed Acting CEO. The airline credited him with helping stabilise operations and guiding the company through a leadership transition while implementing its turnaround strategy.
Waswani now takes over the airline’s leadership on an interim basis as Kenya Airways searches for a permanent CEO and pursues potential investors to support its turnaround.
