Kenya is stepping up preparations for the expected El Niño rains between October and December, with authorities warning of above-normal rainfall across most parts of the country.
The preparations include mapping flood and other high-risk hotspots to guide early response, evacuation and rescue efforts.
The government is also clearing drains and water channels in flood-prone areas to reduce the risk of flooding. Evacuation centres have been identified, while water levels will be closely monitored to support timely action.
Bridges, roads and other critical infrastructure in areas vulnerable to flooding are being inspected, while early warning systems are being strengthened through local administrators and Nyumba Kumi networks.
Emergency supplies are being pre-positioned to facilitate rapid response, with specialised teams placed on standby for rescue, evacuation and damage assessments.
The measures are aimed at reducing the impact of heavy rains, floods and other emergencies that could arise during the October-December period.
