“Manchester is Not Our Priority ” Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba Hits Back At Ruto’s Govt Plans
Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has sharply criticized the government’s focus on international sports engagements arguing that it distracts from critical domestic economic emergencies.
Her remarks follow a public statement by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who announced plans to bring top English Premier League football clubs Manchester United and Arsenal to Nairobi.
Wamuchomba took to social media to express her discontent emphasizing that bringing foreign football teams to the country should not supersede the urgent need to rescue the ailing agricultural sector.
The legislator pointed out that tea factories across the nation are currently on the verge of collapse due to insurmountable financial challenges.
She revealed that these processing plants are grappling with cumulative debts exceeding 34 billion Kenya Shillings.
According to her statement, a significant portion of this financial burden stems from the government’s failure to disburse promised fertilizer subsidies leaving the factories in severe arrears and unable to operate effectively.
Wamuchomba added that the everyday survival of local farmers and the stability of the agricultural backbone require immediate legislative and executive attention.
She questioned the logic of prioritizing high profile international sporting events when the primary economic drivers in rural areas are suffocating under massive debt.
The lawmaker stressed that while global sports partnerships might offer temporary excitement, they do not address the systemic issues threatening the livelihoods of millions of Kenyans who depend on the tea industry.
Her comments have ignited a broader conversation regarding the allocation of national resources and the government’s communication strategy.
