Ruto Announces KSh1 Billion Stadium for Nyamira, Sets May 2027 Completion Date
Nyamira County is set to receive a major sports infrastructure project after President William Ruto announced plans to invest KSh1 billion in a new international-standard stadium.
The President made the announcement on Sunday, November 8, 2026, while addressing residents during the launch of the Tombe-Mokomoni Road and Last Mile Connectivity projects in North Mugirango.
Ruto said the proposed facility would be ready by May 2027, giving the government approximately six months to deliver the project from the date of his announcement.
He explained that the investment was intended to extend the country’s sports infrastructure beyond Nairobi and give young people in different counties access to modern facilities where they could develop their sporting abilities.
“Tunataka usawa. Lazima tujenge stadium pia kwa watu wa Nyamira,” Ruto said, emphasising that residents of the county also deserved to benefit from national development projects.
He later announced the financial commitment, saying: “Leo ninaanzisha stadium ya watu wa Nyamira ya shilingi bilioni moja.”
The proposed stadium adds Nyamira to the counties benefiting from the government’s ongoing sports facility development programme. Ruto referred to Talanta Stadium, which is under construction in Nairobi, as well as the redevelopment of Gusii Stadium in neighbouring Kisii County.
The President said the government was keen to ensure that sports facilities were not concentrated in a few urban centres but extended to other parts of the country.
If delivered as announced, the Nyamira facility could provide footballers and athletes from the county and neighbouring areas with a modern venue for training and competitions.
The project could also create employment opportunities during construction and support businesses through sporting activities and events once the facility becomes operational.
Gusii Stadium, which is undergoing a KSh1 billion redevelopment, is home to Shabana FC, a Kenyan Premier League side. The Nyamira announcement therefore adds another major stadium commitment in the wider Gusii region.
However, residents will now be looking out for the commencement of construction and further details on implementation as the government works towards the May 2027 deadline.
Ruto’s announcement was a pledge of KSh1 billion for the proposed facility, with the President setting May next year as the target for its completion.
