Accra, Aug. 31, GNA – Dr David Kofi Wuaku, the Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund has urged stakeholders to look beyond the entertainment value of sports and begin treating the sector as a significant economic opportunity for Ghana.
He noted that the gradual resurgence of sporting activities presents the country with an opportunity to create jobs, attract investment and develop businesses around the rapidly evolving sports industry.
Dr Wuaku made the observation during the 2026 Democracy Cup in Kumasi where Asante Kotoko took on rivals Hearts of Oak last Friday.
“Sports is gradually picking up,” he said, describing the development as an opportunity for everybody to earn their leadership and contribute to the sector.
According to him, Ghana must take advantage of the growing interest in sports by creating an environment in which sporting activities can generate economic value.
He noted that the sports industry has potential far beyond what happens on the pitch.
From event management and broadcasting to advertising, sponsorship, merchandising, hospitality, sports technology and tourism, Dr Wuaku believes several businesses and professions can emerge around a vibrant sports industry.
He said young people should be encouraged to identify and take advantage of the opportunities that sports can offer beyond becoming professional athletes.
The Administrator’s comments come at a time when Ghana is seeking innovative ways to finance and develop sports.
The Ghana Sports Fund is expected to play a central role in mobilising resources to support the sector under the Ghana Sports Fund Act, 2025 (Act 1159).
Dr Wuaku said stronger partnerships between government, the private sector and sporting institutions would be critical to unlocking the economic potential of sports.
He believes Ghana can build a sports industry that not only produces athletes but also creates employment, attracts investment and contributes meaningfully to national development.
The challenge, he said, is for stakeholders to recognise the opportunity and provide the leadership required to transform sporting activity into sustainable economic value.
