South Africa’s rugby team defeated New Zealand 33:26 in the second Test match in Cape Town and levelled the series at 1:1. After losing 16:33 in the first game, the South Africans led 24:14 at halftime and held onto their advantage despite two late tries by their opponents.

As Daily Maverick reports, the match took place at DHL Stadium. The hosts opened the scoring in less than two minutes, with centre Jesse Kriel scoring a try. Damian de Allende and captain Siya Kolisi also scored for South Africa.

Course of the first half

New Zealand responded with a try by Cam Roigard following an attack down the right flank. However, after the restart, South Africa were awarded an offside penalty, which Cheslin Kolbe converted. Later, de Allende finished an attack that began from a maul, and before the break Kolisi scored his team’s third try after a play from a five-metre scrum.

Kolbe converted all seven kicks at goal — three conversions and four penalties — and scored 18 points. For New Zealand, in addition to Roigard, Damian McKenzie, Leroy Carter and Ardie Savea scored tries. Ruben Love made three conversions.

Key period of the second half

At the start of the second half, South Africa extended their lead thanks to Kolbe’s penalties. One of them was awarded after Tupou Vaa’i blocked Kolbe while he was chasing a high kick. South Africa received another penalty after Malcolm Marx won the contest for the ball.

The New Zealanders reduced the deficit in the final 15 minutes through tries by Carter and Savea but were unable to level the score. For new All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie, this defeat was his first in his ninth match in charge.
