Salif Keita Cancels South Africa Concerts Amid Anti-Migrant Violence

Malian singer and songwriter Salif Keita has cancelled his upcoming concerts in South Africa in response to the escalating anti-migrant protests and violence in the country. Keita, who has been a vocal advocate for migrant rights, expressed his concern over the reports of xenophobic violence and stated that he could not perform in South Africa while such violence was ongoing. Despite this, Keita clarified that he was not closing the door on South Africa entirely, but rather on the violence that was currently plaguing the country.

Malian singer and songwriter Salif Keita has decided to cancel his upcoming concerts in South Africa due to the escalating anti-migrant protests and violence in the country.

South Africa has witnessed several marches against illegal immigration this year, some of which have turned deadly. In a statement on his Facebook page, Keita expressed his concern over the reports of xenophobic violence against African migrants. He stated that he could not, in good conscience, perform in South Africa while such violence was ongoing. Keita clarified that he was not closing the door on South Africa entirely, but rather on the violence that was currently plaguing the country.

He emphasized that he saw the migrants as people seeking work, safety, and dignity, not political issues. Since late May, over 160,000 migrants have left South Africa, according to an AFP tally based on figures released by African governments that organized repatriations, including around 1,500 Nigerians
