Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer, sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Hassan died at about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, according to a burial announcement shared by fellow veteran actor Jide Kosoko. His death was also confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional social media broadcast. Multiple Nigerian media outlets have independently reported the death.
Kira, visibly overwhelmed by grief, announced her father’s death during the broadcast as family members prepared to make arrangements following his passing.
The development came only days after Hassan’s family publicly disclosed that the actor was battling stage-four cancer and appealed to medical specialists and advanced treatment facilities for assistance.
The family had clarified that it was not seeking financial donations but wanted access to medical experts who could potentially provide further treatment options. Reports said doctors had informed the family that chemotherapy was no longer considered an option because of the advanced stage of the illness.
Hassan’s death also comes after an earlier false report of his death circulated online, which was denied by members of his family.
According to the burial announcement attributed to Jide Kosoko, Hassan’s remains were taken to his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, following his death. His burial was scheduled for Monday, August 24, in accordance with Islamic rites. A lying-in-state ceremony was also announced for the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground in Ilaro.
Born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, Hassan built a career spanning more than four decades and became one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema.
His journey into entertainment began in 1981 while he was working as an automobile mechanic. He later spent years working with the Lagos State Water Corporation before leaving the job in 1994 to pursue acting full-time.
Over the years, Ogogo established himself not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter, producer and filmmaker. His career included appearances in several notable productions, including Agbelebu, Owo Blow, Omo Ghetto, Tenant of the House and Aníkúlápó.
His performance as Alaafin Ademuyiwa in Kunle Afolayan’s Aníkúlápó earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
He also returned to the role in Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre, demonstrating his continued relevance to a younger generation of Nigerian film audiences.
Throughout his career, Hassan became particularly celebrated for his contribution to Yoruba cinema and the preservation of indigenous Nigerian storytelling through film and theatre.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from actors, filmmakers, fans and public figures, with many describing him as a major pillar of the Yoruba film industry.
The Ogun State Government has also expressed sadness over the death, describing the veteran actor’s passing as a significant loss to the state, Nigeria’s creative industry and the country.
