Widespread power outage hits parts of Ghana again

Several parts of Ghana were plunged into darkness in the early hours of Thursday, August 20, following a widespread power outage that affected households, businesses and essential services across multiple regions.

In Accra, communities including Adabraka, Weija, Tesano, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Legon, Madina, Adenta and Oyarifa were among the areas affected, with residents reporting power outages from around 4:15 a.m.

The disruption was not limited to the capital, with reports of outages also emerging from Aburi in the Eastern Region, Tamale in the Northern Region and parts of the Central and Ashanti regions.

The cause of the outage is not immediately known, and power sector agencies have yet to provide details on what triggered the disruption or when electricity supply will be fully restored to all affected areas.

Thursday’s outage is the second major disruption to the national power system in less than a month.

On July 29, 2026, several parts of the country experienced a similar widespread outage at around the same time of day, affecting communities in Accra, Tema, Kasoa and parts of the Ashanti and Eastern regions.

The recurrence of the outages is likely to renew concerns about the stability of the national power grid and the reliability of electricity supply.

Citi News will provide further updates as information becomes available from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and other relevant power sector agencies.
