Western Kenya Leaders Threaten to Withdraw Uhuru Kenyatta’s Retirement Benefits

Western Kenya Leaders have come forward, threatening to sponsor a motion for the withdrawal of pensions from former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

While speaking during a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) public forum in Kakamega County on August 20, the leaders led by Sirisia MP John Waluke, stated that the reason is because of his alleged involvement in active politics despite his retirement.

“If the former President continues engaging in active politics, his pension should be withdrawn. Why is he doing politics yet he is a retired President, which is against the constitution,” Waluke stated.

Kakamega County Deputy Governor Ayub Savula took the opportunity to reiterate the same sentiments, urging MP Waluke to join forces with fellow parliamentarians to sponsor the very same motion in Parliament.

“I am saying that if the Former President is engaging in active politics six months after his retirement, I am supporting MP Waluke to take that motion to parliament for the former President’s pension to be withdrawn.”

The leaders have on different occasions been alleging that Uhuru has been sponsoring the Linda Mwananchi Movement in their campaigns as they traverse different parts of the country in a bid to unseat President Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

Western Kenya political leaders have pledged to deliver four million votes for President Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid. Led by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, the coalition team is leading grassroots campaigns for the Head of State in their respective counties.

Behind the vote pledge lie significant political demands. Western leaders are pushing strongly for the region to secure the Deputy Presidency slot on the 2027 ticket, alongside a strategic agreement positioning a Luhya presidential candidacy for the 2032 general election.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has faced repeated accusations from President William Ruto and allied Kenya Kwanza leaders, including Rift Valley legislators, alleging he is financing opposition figures and sponsoring anti-government activities aimed at destabilising the current administration.

Ruling coalition leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Aron Cheruiyot and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, have accused Uhuru of backing opposition factions and political sabotage ahead of the 2027 elections, and have also gone further to gang up support within the confines of Parliament to sponsor the very same motion of withdrawal of his perks.

The leaders claimed Uhuru’s alleged involvement in active politics is in contravention of Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, which explicitly bars a retired president from holding leadership positions within any political party beyond six months after leaving office.

They are also arguing that the statutes demand neutrality, stressing that active partisan involvement could theoretically prompt Parliament to review state-funded retirement perks, though cutting these benefits remains heavily disputed.
