Methodist Church Ghana urges government to fulfil campaign promises

The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu, has urged the government to fulfil its campaign promises to Ghanaians, saying citizens have high expectations and want to see the commitments translated into tangible results.

He said the government should avoid justifying current challenges by referring to the failures of previous administrations, stressing that voters elected it to provide a new direction based on the promises made during the election campaign.

“My message to the citizenry is, let us fulfil our obligations as citizens. I will like to also extend that to the government to pay close attention to the promises they made to the country when they were campaigning for office,” he said.

Most Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu made the call when he interacted with journalists on the sidelines of the 52nd Conference of The Methodist Church Ghana at St Paul Cathedral in Tema on Wednesday (August 19, 2026).

He said while political leaders could acknowledge shortcomings inherited from previous administrations, such explanations should not become an excuse for failing to deliver on new commitments.

“If we liked what we saw, we wouldn’t have  voted them out. So there’s no point in making any reference. You promised that you would do new things, so we expect that that will be done,” he said.

Support

The Presiding Bishop also highlighted the role of the Church in supporting government efforts to address social and economic challenges, particularly youth unemployment.

He cited the Church’s entrepreneurship programme, which seeks to provide young people with resources, including funding, workspace, capital, tools and other instruments to establish and sustain businesses.

He said although governments made promises to create employment opportunities for young people, the state could not meet every need on its own.

“The government promises a lot. If you follow the politics of the last few years, for example, the government promised to give employment to a lot of young people. I am sure the government does, but it can’t do everything. And that’s where the Church comes in,” he said.

He said the Church’s interventions were intended to complement government programmes and support national development.

He also urged Ghanaians to fulfil their civic responsibilities and expressed hope that the government would meet citizens’ expectations and honour its commitments to the country.

Evangelism

On the direction of the Church, Most Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu said evangelism and winning souls remained central to its mission.

He, however, stressed that the Church must also make deliberate efforts to reconnect members who had become inactive.

He urged ministers and lay leaders to pay attention to members who had stopped attending church and determine the circumstances behind their absence.

He noted that some members had experienced crises, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic, which had affected their participation in church activities.

He therefore called for stronger pastoral care to help such members reconnect with the Church.

Introspection

The Presiding Bishop said the annual conference remained an important feature of Methodist governance, tracing its origins to John Wesley and the early Methodist movement.

He said the Conference provided a platform for deliberations on the affairs and future direction of the Church.

He said although the Conference would determine programmes and priorities for the year, its fundamental mission remained rooted in Scripture, to evangelise and win souls.
