Constituency Games will take Mahama’s Reset Ghana sports agenda to every community — Samson Deen

Chair of the National Sports Authority’s Resource Mobilisation and Partnership Committee, Samson Deen, says the proposed Constituency Games will be a key pillar of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Ghana Sports Agenda.

Deen believes the nationwide multi-sport initiative can take talent identification, organised competition and development opportunities directly to communities across the country.

The proposal has also received institutional backing from the Presidency. In a September 3, 2025 letter to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed that the Office of the President supports the organisation of the Constituency Games and urged the Ministry to coordinate their implementation.

Speaking at the inauguration of the NSA Resource Mobilisation and Partnership Committee in Accra, Deen said Ghana’s sporting transformation must extend beyond Accra and other major cities to every constituency.

He said the Games could create a pathway from community competition to regional and national championships, with outstanding athletes potentially progressing to scholarships, academies, centres of excellence and national-team programmes.

The initiative is also intended to promote greater inclusion, with women and girls, persons with disabilities and athletes in less prominent sporting disciplines expected to benefit from structured competition and talent development opportunities.

Deen further proposed the creation of a national digital talent database to track athletes’ performances and development, allowing federations, coaches and accredited scouts to monitor promising talents beyond the competition period.

Beyond sporting development, he believes the Games could generate economic opportunities for communities through transport, hospitality, food vending, equipment supply, media production and other services.

Deen also called for strong corporate participation, arguing that the competition should be viewed as a commercially valuable national platform capable of offering sponsorship, broadcast and community activation opportunities.

However, he stressed that transparency and accountability would be essential to the success of the programme, including clear competition regulations, transparent procurement, financial reporting, safeguarding measures and accessible complaint mechanisms.

“The Constituency Games are more than a sporting competition. They are a national movement to unite communities, create opportunities for young people, stimulate local economic activity and rebuild Ghana’s sporting foundations from the grassroots,” Deen said.
