Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nonye Ayeni

Nigeria and Botswana have taken steps to deepen bilateral trade and expand market access for Nigerian products in Southern Africa, following a high-level Nigeria–Botswana Trade Mission to Gaborone.

The Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Nonye Ayeni, who was part of the Nigerian delegation, said the mission provided an important platform for Nigerian businesses to explore opportunities in Botswana and gain access to the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC) market.

Ayeni described Botswana as an important gateway for Nigeria’s efforts to expand its export footprint across Southern Africa, stressing that Nigeria’s position as a major trade hub on the continent could be leveraged to strengthen commercial relations between the two countries.

The delegation was led by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, and included officials and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

During the mission, Nigerian and Botswana authorities held discussions on trade facilitation, implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and practical measures to reduce barriers confronting businesses seeking to trade between the two countries.

The engagements also focused on creating a more conducive environment for private-sector participation and strengthening business-to-business relationships.

A major component of the mission was the interaction between Nigerian exporters and their Botswana counterparts, during which a range of Made-in-Nigeria products were introduced, displayed, sampled and tested.

According to Ayeni, the business engagements produced encouraging outcomes, with some Nigerian companies receiving requests for product samples, while others entered discussions on distribution arrangements in the Botswana market.

Some participating businesses, she disclosed, also secured actual orders, indicating growing commercial interest in Nigerian products among buyers in Botswana.

The NEPC chief said the outcomes demonstrated the importance of taking Nigerian businesses directly into international markets and creating opportunities for exporters to establish relationships with potential buyers and distributors.

She noted that the Council’s objective was not merely to promote Nigerian products abroad but to facilitate sustainable commercial relationships that would translate into actual export transactions.

“For us at NEPC, the goal is to make the world a marketplace for Nigerian products,” Ayeni said.

The mission is expected to contribute to Nigeria’s broader efforts to diversify its export destinations, increase non-oil exports and strengthen the country’s participation in intra-African trade.

With Botswana serving as a member of SADC, the increased commercial engagement could also provide Nigerian businesses with opportunities to explore markets beyond Botswana and establish a stronger presence within the wider Southern African region.

The delegation’s participation of agencies responsible for trade, customs and product regulation was also aimed at addressing some of the regulatory and logistical issues that can affect cross-border commerce.

The NEPC has continued to promote export diversification under its mandate to develop and expand Nigeria’s non-oil export sector, with particular emphasis on increasing the competitiveness and international acceptance of Nigerian products.

The Nigeria–Botswana Trade Mission therefore represents another step in efforts to translate the opportunities offered by AfCFTA into concrete business transactions, stronger regional trade links and increased visibility for Made-in-Nigeria products across the African market.
