The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected new regional executives across the country, with the elections held last Saturday, August 15, 2026, described as peaceful despite keen contests in several regions.
The polls, which form part of the party’s preparations for the 2028 general election, have ushered in new leadership in some regions while incumbents retained their positions in others.
Greater-Accra Region
In the Greater Accra Region, former Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, secured a decisive victory to become the new Regional Chairman.
Dr. Okoe-Boye polled 490 votes to defeat Alfred Boye, who obtained 172 votes. His victory comes as the NPP seeks to rebuild its fortunes in the region after suffering significant losses in the 2024 general election.
The party, which previously held 14 of the region’s 34 parliamentary seats, was reduced to five following the 2024 polls.
Dr. Okoe-Boye has pledged to lead the rebuilding effort and strengthen the party’s grassroots structures, while also working towards the election of the NPP’s 2028 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as President.
“We shall not rest until we make Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia President of the Republic of Ghana,” he said in a message following his victory.
Northern Region
From the Northern Region, Eric Kombat reports from Tamale that the incumbent Regional Chairman, Mohammed Baantima Adam, popularly known as Samba, retained his position after defeating three other contenders.
Baantima Adam polled 215 votes, followed by Inusah Amadu with 122 votes, Fuseini Musah with 44 votes and Salifu Rahman Mumin with five votes.
In his victory speech, Mr. Adam called on party members to forgive one another and unite ahead of the 2028 elections.
“Unity is important, and so today nobody is a winner and nobody is a loser, but the NPP is the winner. Let’s forgive each other and come together as a family,” he said.
He pledged that the new regional executive would work to recapture parliamentary seats lost by the party in the region.
Eric Kombat also reports that Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana retained the Savannah Regional Chairmanship, while Nurudeen Fuseini was also re-elected as North East Regional Chairman.
Ashanti Region
In the Ashanti Region, I.F. Joe Awuah reports from Kumasi that Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, won the chairmanship by a wide margin.
He secured 658 votes against 269 votes obtained by his only challenger, Kwabena Kokofu, in an election held under tight security but described as peaceful.
The result gave COKA a strong mandate to lead the party in the region, where the NPP has traditionally enjoyed considerable support.
In his maiden address, the newly elected chairman called for unity among party members and extended an invitation to all candidates who lost the elections and their supporters to join his administration.
“To all the candidates who contested, especially those who did not win, there is a place for you in my administration. Your experience, ideas, and commitment are valuable to the party,” he said.
He urged members to put the contest behind them and work together to return the NPP to power in 2028.
Western Region
In the Western Region, Emmanuel Opoku reports from Agona-Nkwanta that a businessman, Ignatius Kwasi Afrifa, emerged as the new Regional Chairman after defeating former Regional Organiser, Abdul Ganyi Mohammed.
Mr. Afrifa secured 265 votes against Mr. Ganyi’s 102 votes.
The new chairman pledged to re-energise the party’s grassroots base and work towards winning a majority of the region’s 17 parliamentary seats in the next general election.
The NPP currently holds only two seats in the region, which are Takoradi and Effia.
Mr. Afrifa also promised to unite the party and support the presidential campaign of Dr. Bawumia in the 2028 elections.
Ignatius Asaah Mensah was elected First Vice Chairman, while Francis Abeku Yankah became Second Vice Chairman.
Former Ellembelle District Chief Executive, Kwasi Bonzoh, won the Regional Secretary position with 211 votes, defeating incumbent Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa, who polled 157 votes.
Lawrence Takyi was elected Deputy Secretary, while incumbent Amoabeng Acheampong retained the Organiser position.
Emmanuel Acquaah was elected Regional Communications Director, with Osagyefo Attiah Kwaw and Augustina Nketiah emerging as Youth and Women’s Organisers respectively.
Volta Region
In the Volta Region, Daniel K. Orlando reports from Ho that Makafui Kofi Woanyah retained the Regional Chairmanship after a closely fought contest with his long-standing challenger, Joseph Homenya.
Mr. Woanyah polled 169 votes against Mr. Homenya’s 148 to win by 21 votes.
The contest marked the third time the two had faced each other for the regional chairmanship.
Other elected executives include Kenneth Kodzo Ayim as First Vice Chairman, Parlous Quarshie as Second Vice Chairman and Shabanton Kwesi Dutsrogbe as Secretary.
Mr. Dutsrogbe secured one of the narrowest victories of the elections, defeating Samuel Attahchie by a single vote – 156 to 155.
Titus Attamiah was elected Deputy Secretary, while Lebene Cate Gbeti won the Women’s Organiser position.
Klutse Christo Wisdom emerged as Organiser, Perry Kwashie became Communications Officer, and Emmanuel Senyo Amekplenu was elected Youth Organiser.
Oxford Kosi Agboli won the Treasurer position, while Abdulai Suala emerged as Nasara Coordinator.
Across the regions, the successful candidates are expected to focus on rebuilding the NPP’s grassroots structures, strengthening internal cohesion and regaining public support ahead of the 2028 general election.
Bono Region
In the Bono Region, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has retained the NPP Regional Chairmanship after defeating four other contestants in a closely contested election.
Mr. Baffoe polled 201 votes to secure another mandate to lead the party’s regional structures and coordinate its activities across the region.
He was followed by Yaw Afful with 44 votes and Joseph Mensah with 31 votes, while Afari Gyan and Kwabena Oppong did not receive any votes.
Kate Amponsah Agyare was elected First Vice Chairman after polling 252 votes against Peter Boampong Asomah’s 29.
Kwaku Antwi Agyei won the Second Vice Chairman position with 123 votes, defeating Issa Issaka, who obtained 89 votes, and Kwadwo Agyekum, who polled 68.
Kofi Ofosu Boateng emerged as Regional Secretary with 187 votes, beating Asare Baffour Ebenezer, who secured 93 votes.
Randy Ashraf Issahaku won the Deputy Secretary position with 145 votes, defeating Stephen Opuni, who polled 135 votes, while one ballot was rejected.
The Women’s Organiser contest was won by Samira Sulley with 142 votes, narrowly beating Doris Asomah, who secured 139 votes.
Shadrach Abrefah Mensah emerged as Youth Organiser with 92 votes. He was followed by Dauda Ibrahim Bamba with 102 votes, Joeffrey Kwarteng Brobbey with 58 votes and Alhaji Baba Suwari with 29 votes.
Faisal Osman Mohammed won the Nasara Organiser position with 177 votes against Wahab Bashiru’s 101 votes, with two ballots rejected.
In the Treasurer contest, Veronica Tuffour polled 131 votes to edge Henry Osei, who obtained 124 votes, while Kassim Siaka secured 25 votes.
Abdul Razak Oppong recorded a convincing victory in the Organiser race with 229 votes against Darlington Bill Boampong’s 52.
Fahd Osman also won the Communications position with 170 votes, defeating Abubakari Yakubu, who polled 111.
Abronye’s re-election comes as the NPP seeks to strengthen its regional structures, improve grassroots mobilisation and prepare for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Bawumia Calls For Unity
Meanwhile, the flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for unity within the party following the successful conclusion of the regional executive elections.
In a statement issued by the NPP Communications Directorate, Dr. Bawumia congratulated the newly elected regional executives and commended party members for the peaceful conduct of the elections.
He said the peaceful nature of the polls reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to internal democracy and respect for the will of its members.
Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the newly elected executives would provide the leadership required to strengthen the party and position it for victory in the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He also commended all candidates who offered themselves for service and urged those who were unsuccessful to support and work with the newly elected executives.
According to him, the completion of the regional elections should mark the beginning of a renewed effort to unite the party and rebuild its structures ahead of the 2028 elections.
“The regional contest is over, the greater task is unity and renewed energy to secure victory in 2028, and it begins now,” Dr. Bawumia said.
