Mwamba RFC captain Shaquel Bosire believes the hosts can build on their impressive run at the Dala 7s and mount a serious challenge for the Kabeberi 7s title when the third leg of the 2026 SportPesa National 7s Circuit gets underway at the RFUEA Grounds.

The tournament, scheduled for August 15–16 kicks off today, presenting Mwamba with an opportunity to improve on their performance in Kisumu, where they reached the Cup semi-finals and collected 17 points.

Speaking during the Kabeberi 7s captains’ shoot, Bosire said the tournament carries extra significance for Mwamba because of its status as their home event. He believes the team’s improved understanding and two weeks of preparation have put them in a strong position to compete.

“Kabeberi 7s is a special tournament for us because it is our home tournament. From our performance in Kisumu at the Dala 7s, our momentum has gone up and the team has gelled together. The boys now know how to play together,” said Bosire.

“We finished third, so we are expecting more this weekend. We have had two weeks to prepare, and I think that has been enough time for us to polish our mistakes and build on the things we did well,” he added.

Mwamba endured a difficult opening round at the Prinsloo 7s, collecting just five points, but bounced back strongly in Kisumu to reach the Cup semi-finals. Their 17-point haul at Dala moved them to seventh in the overall circuit standings with 22 points after two legs.

Bosire is now hoping the home crowd can inspire the side to take another step forward and challenge for the title.

The return of several players has also provided Mwamba with a boost ahead of Kabeberi. Former Kenya Sevens captain Tony Omondi returns to the squad after missing the Dala 7s, while the club’s U20 players are also back following their involvement with Chipu at the Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy in Uganda.

Kenya Under-20 recently reclaimed the continental title, and Bosire believes the young players can carry that winning mentality into the Kabeberi 7s.

“From what I would tell our Kulabu fans, they should expect a good performance at Kabeberi 7s because the boys have been together and we have polished so much. Our U20 players are also back with the squad, and they gave a good performance in Uganda by winning the Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy with Chipu,” said Bosire.

“They are bringing that momentum here to Kabeberi, and we are expecting to compete for the title,” he added.

Kabeberi7s Captains shoot at Raila Odinga Stadium,Nairobi.

Mwamba have been drawn in Pool B alongside Strathmore Leos, Nondescripts RFC and CUEA Monks, setting up a competitive pool-stage campaign.

The hosts will begin their campaign against Nondescripts at 8:40am before taking on CUEA Monks at noon. They will complete their pool fixtures against Strathmore Leos at 4:20pm.

Mwamba will be led by Bosire and Brian Mutugi, who have both been listed as captains, while the squad also includes experienced campaigners such as Omondi.

The team will be looking to make full use of home advantage and the support of the Kulabu faithful as they aim to turn their improved form into a deep run in the knockout stages.

After showing signs of revival at Dala, Mwamba now have an opportunity to announce themselves as genuine contenders at Kabeberi. With confidence growing within the squad and their U20 players returning with fresh silverware, Bosire believes the hosts have every reason to aim higher.

For Mwamba, the target is clear: build on Dala, make the most of home advantage and fight for the Kabeberi 7s crown.
