A matatu carrying an estimated 50 passengers from Ivingoni Ward to Kyathi lost control, veered off the road and rolled several times at Kalembwani in Makueni County.
The crash prompted a multi-agency rescue response involving the Kenya Red Cross, Makueni County disaster management officials and the Kenya Police.
The Kenya Red Cross said injured passengers were evacuated to Makueni County Referral Hospital for treatment. The agency did not immediately disclose how many people were injured or whether the crash caused any deaths.
The circumstances that caused the matatu to lose control were also not immediately known.
Rescue teams respond
In a post on Saturday, August 15, 2026, Kenya Red Cross said the emergency teams moved to the scene after the matatu left the road and rolled several times.
“A multi-agency team, comprising Kenya Red Cross, County Disaster Management, and Kenya Police, responded,” the agency said in an incident update.
The coordinated response focused on assisting passengers, evacuating those who sustained injuries and managing the crash scene.
The Red Cross confirmed that injured people were taken to Makueni County Referral Hospital, where they were to receive medical attention.
The condition of those admitted to the hospital was not immediately available.
Police are expected to investigate the accident and establish what happened before the matatu veered off the road.
Scene clearance ongoing
The emergency operation was still underway at the crash site, with responders working to clear the wreckage.
“Scene clearance ongoing,” the Kenya Red Cross said.
The agency did not provide a final casualty count as rescue and clearance operations continued.
The crash highlights the risks faced by passengers travelling in public service vehicles, particularly when a vehicle loses control on the road.

Kijabe accident
This comes days after a major multi-vehicle accident was reported at Kijabe along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Kiambu County, with emergency teams carrying out rescue operations at the scene.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the Kijabe accident on Monday, August 10, 2026, saying the crash involved multiple vehicles and had been classified as a mass casualty incident.
“A mass casualty incident involving multiple vehicles has occurred at Kijabe along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, Kiambu County. Rescue efforts are ongoing,” the Kenya Red Cross said in a statement posted on X.
The organisation said its first responders were heading to the scene, while ambulances dispatched by SHA Kenya were already on the ground to assist victims.
