A fresh wave of investment is starting to emerge outside of the nation’s main economic centers as padel solidifies its status as one of the participation sports with the quickest rate of growth in South Africa.

Entrepreneurs are increasingly recognising that smaller towns present an untapped opportunity to grow the sport while stimulating local economic activity, community wellbeing, and business collaboration.

One such example is GBC Padel Club in Kuruman, in the Northern Cape, where founder Keamogetse Modise is building a community-focused sporting enterprise designed to make padel accessible while creating broader value for the local economy.

While much of South Africa’s investment in padel has been concentrated in metropolitan areas, GBC Padel Club believes the next phase of the sport’s growth lies in expanding quality sporting infrastructure into underserved communities.

The club’s model extends beyond providing courts, positioning sport as a platform for wellness, social inclusion, skills development, and local economic participation.

“Our vision is not simply to build padel courts,” says Modise. “We are building a community asset that encourages healthier lifestyles, creates opportunities for partnerships and provides a platform where people can connect, do business and participate in a growing sport.”

The club offers professionally managed padel facilities, coaching programmes, equipment hire and social leagues, while also hosting corporate tournaments, networking events and community activations that bring together businesses, families, and sports enthusiasts.

These activities contribute to increased visitor spending, create opportunities for local suppliers and service providers, and encourage collaboration between the private sector and community organisations.

As organisations place greater emphasis on employee wellbeing and meaningful stakeholder engagement, participation sports such as padel are increasingly becoming platforms for corporate wellness, client engagement, and team building. GBC Padel Club is responding to this demand by developing experiences that combine sport, networking, and community impact.

On 11 July 2026, the club hosted the GBC Padel Brunch, bringing together business leaders, professionals, and community members for a day centred on wellness, networking, and participation.

The event reflected the club’s broader ambition of positioning sport as an enabler of economic participation and stronger community relationships. On 9 August, they held “CEOs and Champagne,” an event for women in business.

Beyond padel, GBC Padel Club also promotes participation in tennis, bowls and squash, reinforcing the role that accessible sporting infrastructure can play in improving quality of life while encouraging long-term community development.

As South Africa’s sports economy continues to evolve, sporting enterprises like GBC Padel Club demonstrates how investment in participation sport can extend beyond recreation — supporting local enterprise, attracting partnerships, promoting healthier communities and unlocking new economic opportunities in regions often overlooked by mainstream sporting investment.
