The Highlife to the World (H2TW) – The Black Star Experience 2027 initiative, a groundbreaking campaign designed to elevate Ghana’s legendary Highlife music onto the global stage, officially launched at the Seasea Club in Barcelona, Spain, on August 2, 2026. The event marked the beginning of a year-long celebration aimed at showcasing the rich heritage of Highlife while positioning Ghanaian artists as international ambassadors of the genre.

A Prestigious Launch with Diplomatic and Industry Support

The launch was attended by Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain, Mrs. Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe, alongside Gideon Aryeequaye, the Executive Secretary of the Creative Arts Agency, who emphasized the campaign’s significance. The event also drew leading figures from the music industry, cultural diplomats, and Ghanaian dignitaries, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this monumental initiative.

Speaking at the launch, Gideon Aryeequaye highlighted the campaign’s dual purpose: “This is not just about promoting Highlife—it’s about creating a platform for Ghanaian creatives to shine globally while ensuring the preservation of this cultural treasure for future generations.” The event was part of broader celebrations leading up to Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary in 2027, reinforcing the nation’s cultural diplomacy efforts.

A Night of Music, Dance, and Global Collaboration

The launch featured high-energy performances from some of Ghana’s most celebrated artists, including:
– Jupitar – A modern Highlife maestro known for blending traditional rhythms with contemporary sounds.
– Bessa Simons – A rising star whose fusion of Highlife and Afrobeats has gained international acclaim.
– Obrafour – A veteran artist whose contributions to Highlife have cemented his legacy in Ghanaian music.
– Stonebwoy – A global superstar whose Highlife-infused tracks have resonated across Africa and beyond.
– Lucky Star Band – A legendary ensemble that has been instrumental in keeping Highlife alive through generations.

The evening was further enhanced by DJ sets from DJ Logs, DJ Demo, DJ King Solo, and a special appearance by Nigerian DJ Enny, who brought an African dancehall vibe to the mix. The dynamic lineup ensured that the event was a melting pot of Highlife’s evolution, from its roots to its modern interpretations.

Key Figures Pledge Continued Support for Highlife’s Global Expansion

Several prominent figures in Ghana’s cultural and diplomatic landscape reiterated their commitment to ensuring the success of H2TW 2027. Among them were:
– Rex Omar, Presidential Aide and Coordinator of The Black Star Experience, who stressed the importance of 2027 as a year of cultural celebration, aligning with Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary.
– Meredith Naakai Lamptey, Ghana’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO in Paris, who underscored the campaign’s role in promoting Ghana’s intangible cultural heritage on an international platform.
– Ambassador Kalsoume Sinare Baffoe, who emphasized the diplomatic significance of Highlife as a tool for soft power and cultural exchange.

The event was also attended by Lara Torres, Events Lead at Seasea Club, who expressed excitement about the campaign’s potential: “We are honored to host an initiative as impactful as Highlife to the World. Highlife is the foundation of Afrobeats, and we hope to make this an annual event for our global audience.”

A Multinational Effort with Broad-Based Collaboration

The Highlife to the World (H2TW) 2027 campaign is a joint venture involving several key organizations, including:
– Showbiz Africa – A leading entertainment platform dedicated to promoting African music.
– Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) – The governing body for Ghanaian musicians, ensuring industry representation.
– The Black Star Experience – A flagship initiative by the Government of Ghana aimed at global cultural promotion.
– Benayacon – A major music and culture festival in Spain, contributing to the campaign’s international reach.
– Ghana Embassy in Madrid – Facilitating diplomatic support and logistical coordination.
– Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts – Overseeing cultural policy and heritage preservation.
– Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Supporting Ghana’s cultural diplomacy efforts.
– Creative Arts Agency – Leading the creative and organizational aspects of the campaign.
– Ghana Tourism Authority – Ensuring tourism integration and global promotion.
– National Folklore Board – Preserving and promoting Ghana’s traditional cultural expressions.

The Roadmap: Workshops, Masterclasses, and Global Concerts

The H2TW 2027 campaign will unfold through a multi-city tour, featuring:
– Masterclasses and Workshops – Conducted by Ghanaian Highlife artists and producers, offering insights into the genre’s history, techniques, and future trends.
– Concerts and Live Performances – Showcasing Highlife’s evolution in Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, with collaborations between Ghanaian and international artists.
– Cultural Exhibitions – Highlighting the history, instruments, and social impact of Highlife through visual and interactive displays.

The full roadmap for the campaign will be unveiled later in 2026 at the Highlife Festival, hosted by Laboma Beach Resort in Accra, where artists, policymakers, and industry leaders will gather to discuss the future of Highlife and its global influence.

Why Highlife Matters in the Global Music Landscape

Highlife, often referred to as “Ghana’s gift to the world,” has been a pioneering genre that laid the foundation for Afrobeats, dancehall, and modern African pop. Its syncopated rhythms, brass instruments, and socially conscious lyrics have made it a cultural export that resonates with millions.

By positioning Highlife as a global phenomenon, the H2TW 2027 campaign aims to:
✔ Educate new generations about the genre’s origins and significance.
✔ Empower Ghanaian artists to compete on international stages.
✔ Strengthen Ghana’s cultural diplomacy by showcasing its musical heritage.
✔ Foster cross-cultural collaborations that enrich African music globally.

As the campaign gains momentum, it is poised to redefine Ghana’s musical legacy, ensuring that Highlife’s legacy endures for decades to come. The Barcelona launch was just the beginning—2027 promises to be a year where Highlife takes center stage worldwide.
