DR Congo Ebola Death Toll Passes 930 as Canada Tightens Border Rules

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has risen to at least 930, with health officials reporting 37 deaths in a single 24-hour period as the Bundibugyo strain continues to spread. Canada has introduced temporary entry restrictions for people who have recently been in DR Congo, despite the World Health Organization advising against travel bans.

Botswana Warns Citizens Against Russian Military Recruitment

Botswana has accused Russia of using deceptive tactics to recruit its citizens to fight in Ukraine, saying some were promised jobs, bonuses, and citizenship before being sent to the front lines. The warning adds to growing concern across Africa, with Kenya saying more than 1,000 of its citizens have traveled to Russia to fight and calling on Moscow to stop the recruitment.

São Tomé and Príncipe President Wins Second Term

President Carlos Vila Nova has won a second five-year term in São Tomé and Príncipe after securing more than 55% of the vote, avoiding a runoff. Running as an independent after splitting with the ruling Independent Democratic Action party, Vila Nova defeated challenger Nito Abreu, who campaigned on creating jobs and slowing youth emigration.

Armed Groups Ambush Malian Military Convoy

Militants linked to al Qaeda and a Tuareg-led separatist alliance ambushed a military convoy in northern Mali, with a source close to the rebels claiming more than 50 Malian soldiers and allied Russian fighters were killed. Mali’s army said it responded with airstrikes that killed at least 20 insurgents, while the military retained control of the town of Anefis.

Morocco Expands Tourism Push Ahead of 2030 World Cup

Morocco plans to add 60,000 hotel beds before co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal as it looks to build on record tourism growth. The government is investing more than $20 billion in transport, stadiums, and other infrastructure while aiming to attract 26 million visitors annually by 2030.

Ghana Launches New 5G Spectrum Auction

Ghana has opened bidding for new 5G spectrum licenses in a move expected to raise at least $230 million and accelerate the country’s next-generation mobile network rollout. The auction follows the government’s decision to scrap an exclusive nationwide 5G deal in favor of allowing multiple operators to acquire spectrum directly.
