South Africa will bid a final farewell to veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi this week following his death on 15 July 2026 after complications related to diabetes.

The acclaimed stage and screen performer, whose career spanned more than 40 years, will be honoured with two public memorial services before being laid to rest in Polokwane.

Memorial service at the South African State Theatre

Sebogodi’s primary memorial service will take place on Thursday, 23 July, at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria, a venue closely associated with his long and distinguished career in the performing arts.

The service is expected to be attended by family, friends, fellow actors, government representatives and members of the public wishing to celebrate the life of one of South Africa’s most respected cultural figures.

Limpopo community to pay tribute

A second memorial service has been scheduled for Friday at Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane, giving the Limpopo community an opportunity to honour the veteran actor, who maintained strong ties to the province throughout his life.

Funeral to be held on Saturday

Sebogodi’s funeral will take place on Saturday at Jack Botes Hall, where relatives, colleagues and supporters will gather to celebrate a career that helped shape South African theatre and television.

The family has invited members of the public to join them in honouring Sebogodi’s life and legacy.

Tributes continue to pour in

The funeral announcement comes days after tributes poured in from across South Africa’s entertainment industry following news of his passing.

Actors, producers, directors and cultural organisations have remembered Sebogodi as a gifted performer, respected mentor and passionate advocate for the performing arts. Many have praised his dedication to developing young talent and preserving South Africa’s rich storytelling tradition.

A legacy that shaped South African entertainment

Sebogodi was best known to television audiences for his portrayal of Kenneth Mashaba in Generations, a role that earned him widespread recognition.

Throughout his career, he also appeared in productions including Scandal!, Rhythm City and The River, while remaining a highly respected figure in South African theatre.

His influence extended well beyond the stage and screen, with many crediting him for inspiring generations of actors through his mentorship, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the arts.

As family, friends and fans prepare to say their final goodbye, Seputla Sebogodi is being remembered not only for his memorable performances but also for the lasting impact he made on South Africa’s cultural landscape.
