South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just weeks after helping his country make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Adams, widely regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents, was found dead on Saturday at a property in Military Road, Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town.

Confirming the incident, South African Police Service spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said an inquest docket had been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the player’s death.

“Cape Town Central police registered an inquest for investigation following the discovery of the body of a 25-year-old male at a premises in Military Road, Schotsche Kloof. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”

Authorities have not disclosed the cause of death. Although some South African media reports have speculated that Adams may have died by suicide, police have not confirmed those claims, and investigations remain ongoing.

The tragic news comes barely two weeks after Adams represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

During the tournament, the midfielder displayed remarkable resilience after suffering a personal tragedy when his grandmother died shortly before one of South Africa’s group-stage matches.

Despite the devastating loss, Adams chose to remain with the national team and continued playing for his country.

Born in Cape Town, Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC, rising through the club’s academy before making his senior debut and establishing himself as one of the Premier Soccer League’s standout midfielders.

His outstanding performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025, where he quickly became a key figure in the club’s midfield, helping the Brazilians secure major domestic honours and the CAF Champions League title.

Adams also became an integral member of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, earning international recognition for his composure, creativity and tireless work rate in midfield.

His performances at both club and international levels had marked him out as one of South Africa’s most promising footballers.

Tributes poured in from across South Africa and beyond following news of his death.

Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie described Adams’ passing as a heartbreaking loss to South African sport, while Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, the South African Football Association and football fans across the continent paid tribute to a player remembered not only for his immense talent but also for his humility and professionalism.

The South African football community is now awaiting the outcome of the police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

For many supporters, however, the focus remains on celebrating the life of a gifted footballer whose journey from Stellenbosch to Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team inspired countless young players.

His sudden death has left an enormous void in South African football and cut short a career that many believed was destined for even greater heights.
