Former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has said he has enjoyed his first extended experience of South Africa outside of playing duty, having taken up a broadcasting role with SuperSport for the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The former Watford defender, who was part of SuperSport’s broadcast team covering the tournament across sub-Saharan Africa, said the experience had given him the freedom to enjoy South Africa in a way his playing career never permitted.

“I have really enjoyed it. It has been great being part of the SuperSport team and meeting some amazing current and former players,” he said.

“Although it was a little colder than I am used to, I had a fantastic time. It was also the first time in many years that I have been in South Africa without being here as a player.”

Troost-Ekong explained that being away from active competition had given him the chance to take in aspects of the country he would ordinarily have had little time for.

“When you are playing, you are naturally a bit more restricted in terms of what you can and cannot do. This time, I have been able to take everything in and experience some of the best parts of South Africa whenever I have not been working,” he said.

The former captain also spoke glowingly of the country’s food and music scene, saying he had made the most of his off-season before returning to club duty.

“I have enjoyed some great food, listened to good music in all the right places, and had one or two drinks since it is my off-season. It has been nice to enjoy everything outside of work, because once I head back home, it will be time to focus on my other job, which is still playing football. Pre-season will begin, and everything will become much more serious again,” he said.
